Don’t shop at 47th Street Photo
I bought a 2x teleconverter from 47st.photo at eBay in September. The seller has until now not made even what I can consider an attempt on solving the issue, so I’ve given up, and hereby report the issue to eBay. I also write this as a warning of people who consider doing business with this company. Don’t do business with them unless you can walk in the door and hold the actual product.
The item I was bidding for was this: Canon EOS Rebel K2 Ti GII 7n 2x Pro Telephoto Extender and it had the following picture on eBay:
This item is what I got:![]()
As you can see, it clearly sais macro and 0.42X, not tele, not 2x.
I contacted the seller as he had requested in writing before leaving feedback. Any decent person would. I described the problem detailed, but the answer back was a one-liner: hello this is the same lens. (entire mailing history enclosed for your inspection) After more one-sided mailing to a non-responsive seller, they finally wrote to me asking me to call them. I’d already left them my phone number in case they could not communicate by email, but they clearly could. With them sending the wrong item, it was unreasonable for them to demand that I should bear the expense of an oversees call, much less wait for them to get up in the morning. These are some of the wonders of email: asynchronous and (virtually) free.
Don’t get me wrong, the people handled the shipment in due time and all the “free, bundled” stuff was there. I’m sure it was a glitch in the shipment, but they should take responsability and handle the replacement for the correct lens. After more than a month, I have now given up on them and desided to write this. I’ve bought a 2x extender from another seller on eBay, and the transaction went smooth, just like all my other buys there. I would not discourage people from buying stuff there, but beware. I have now stopped looking at items sold in US dollars and will only buy from within the European community and Scandinavia.

[...] Mogens‘ Canon 10-22mm rocks. That was what I read out of the lineup of Nikon, Sigma, Tokina and Tamron wide-angle zoom leenses. It’s conclusion was to buy a Nikon, but further down argues that he prefers the Canon with lower distortion and price. I’ll borrow Mogens’ lens and put some pictures here. Meanwhile, my take on wide angle has been my Canon 20mm f/2.8 (hmm, no pictures online yet, I’ll have to do something about that. I’ve had the lens for like half a year now) and fish eye lens adapters like the 0.42x I was sent instead of what I’d actually bought or my father’s 180 degrees fisheye adapter. That works well also, but 10mm is awesome! [...]
On the 19/10/2005 I purchased a Meade ETX125 Telescope from 47stphotos and after paying by PayPal, they told me I couldnt and PayPal refunded the money so I paid the US$1,159.90 directly into there bank account. they sent me an email on the 24/11/2005 to say that the money had been received and the item would be posted within 5 business days. On the 3/11/2005 they sent an email to say that the scope had been posted off.
On the 12/02/2006 and after several (20+) emails I was told that the scope was on back order. On the 6/4/2006 they say via email that they have been trying to contact me because they now need another US$100 for postage, and will not post off the item until this amount is paid.
I have just been onto the 47stphotos website and they are still selling the Meade ETX125 telescope for US$869.95 and according to there postage calculator the total to ship to Fremantle, Western Australia as US$1102.53, still some US$57.37 less than I initialy paid them. I have no refund and no telescope, but eBay has paid back to me some US$300 in compensation and have removed 47stphotos from the auction website.
I would very strongly suggest that anyone that wants to buy anything from 47stphotos should do so by walking in through the door, but what ever you do “DONT” trust them.
Speaking of frauds, check out this thread where a guy selling a mac figured someone was trying to fraud him and the actions he took. Great story, but a kid got in the crossfire
I found lots of bad reviews of 47th Street Photo. So 2,5 years later I’m still upset with them, and so are very many other people.
I purchased a lens from 47th St. I got it quick. However, my CC number was stolen right after that and this purchase was the only thing out of the norm for me…makes me wonder…
